IBM is continuously improving their mainframe operating system, z/OS, and their high-end storage systems. In the past year IBM announced z/OS version 2.5, enabling innovative development to support hybrid cloud and AI business applications. IBM also announced the storage array DS8980F Model 998, providing performance for organizations that want to expand their workload possibilities to AI, Business Intelligence and Machine Learning.
These announcements introduce new challenges for the z/OS systems managers and performance analysts. How can the migration to z/OS version 2.5 be prepared and analyzed? And can the performance health of the new and expensive DS8980F storage system be monitored automatically?
IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS version 11.1.0 now provides the solution for these challenges. This release of IntelliMagic Vision adds a number of new variables to assist with z/OS 2.5 migration. With z/OS 2.5, IBM has removed the ability to set WLM Service Definition Coefficients and has internally set them to fixed values. This change may influence installation accounting as well as durations for multi-period Service Classes. The active coefficient values as well as the weighted Service Units for each type are now available within IntelliMagic Vision to assist with planning this key migration.
IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS now also supports the IBM DS8980F storage system. Automated health assessment of the DS8980F is performed daily or even hourly if needed. IntelliMagic Vision provides early warning notifications in case there is a risk that threatens the availability or performance of the DS8980F in the near future. This allows the z/OS systems manager to take action before a performance exception actually occurs, to prevent problems with the availability of the primary business processes.
